Microsoft has released preliminary Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) Release Candidate to tester. TechARP claimed last week, that Vista SP2 had been pushed back a month. But then, yesterday TechARP revised its estimate, saying that Microsoft had "brought forward their release schedule" and would be issuin an "escrow" build this Friday (Jan 29).
Yesterday, several tester had been told by Microsoft that the escrow build of Vista SP2 was available for downloading.
An "escrow" build is a version which is not developed anymore but handled to the testeds and developers, who are asked to shake out the code one more time to make sure there are no fatal bugs.
TechARP's revised timetable claims that Microsoft will beliver the release candidate to the public around 16-20 Feb. Then followed by release-to-manufacturing (RTM) build sometime in May.
Vista SP2 will be released for download at an undertemined date after RTM label placed on the service pack. Experience says that will be two weeks after RTM and no more than six weeks after.
After first appearance of Windows 7 public beta, some have dismissed Vista SP2 as irrelevant.
The fact is, service packs always matter. It make more efficient to update PCs and increased the stability.
